川や海の水の躍動感や水に反射する色を英語で描写することは学習者にとっては難しい作業です。当記事では何回かに分けて水のある風景描写のサンプルをご紹介していきたいと思います。第１回は滝（waterfall)のある写真３つの描写にチャレンジしてみます。以下、それぞれの写真について、英語描写、日本語訳、表現に使った単語解説の順に記載しています。ぜひライティングの参考にしてみてください。
幅広に岩の間を落ちていく滝

はじめは、岩の間を流れる滝を描写してみます。
| A vast waterfall thunders over rocks into the river below. The sun glitters on the choppy water and highlights the mist in the air. The verdant foliage and tree-covered mountains in the background make whole scene look lush and green. The water reflects the green of the surrounding trees, shading into a light blue where the sun is caught in the movement of the river. We can almost feel the warmth of the sun and hear the cries of the birds as they flit from tree to tree in this untouched landscape. |

巨大な滝が大きな音を立てて、岩の上を通り下の川へ流れ込んでいます。太陽は波立つ水の上できらきらと輝き、空気中の霧を際立たせています。背景の生い茂った木に覆われた山々が景色全体を青々とした緑色のイメージに見せています。水は、周りの木々の緑を映し出し、流れに太陽の光が映し出されている部分に薄い青色のグラデーションをつけています。手つかずの自然の中で、太陽の暖かさや飛び回る鳥の鳴き声を感じることができるかのようです。

激しい水しぶきと霧を造り出す滝

次はナイアガラのように激しく落ちる大規模な滝の写真を描写してみます。
| The water is a stunning color, with great clouds of misted water vapor boiling up from the force of the waterfall. The waterfall itself curves around the river below, turning from the blue of the pool above into white and turquoise as water forever spills over the lip of the cliff. Wispy clouds mirror the water vapor and frame the image, with the bright green of a tree springing up from the bottom right of the picture. |

水は、滝のパワーからからたちのぼる沸き立つ霧の水蒸気とともに、驚くほど美しい色です。滝は下にある川の周りに沿ってカーブしています。崖のふちから永遠に水がこぼれ落ちるにつれ、溜まっている青の部分から、上の白と青緑へ変化を遂げています。霞のような雲（状）が水蒸気を反射して、右下に見られる木々の明るい緑とともにイメージを造り出しています。

高いところからまっすぐ落ちている滝

最後は、高所から細い１本の滝が落ちている風景を描写してみます。
| This waterfall is falling so far and so fast that the water has become blurred sheets of pure white. The color of the water makes us feel that it must be icy cold, and we can imagine the shock of it on our skin if we were to put our hand into the flow. The cliff that forms the waterfall is sheer, with greenery clinging on where it can. The surrounding vegetation is a vivid green, crowding in around the waterfall and framing the picture. |

この滝は遠くで急速に落下しており、水は純白でぼやけた感じで広がって見えます。水の色から、氷のように冷たい水を連想させます。手を流れに入れたら驚くのではないかと思います。滝から広がる崖はほぼ垂直に切り立っており、緑色に覆われたものがあちこちに見えます。とり囲んでいる草木が鮮やかな緑の草地となり、滝の周りと写真全体を構成しています。
