“United States is” or “United States are”?
The United StatesやThe Philippinsのように国の名前が複数表記であっても、１つの国という意味で動詞は単数扱いになります。
The United States of America is always a strong contender at the Olympic Games.
アメリカはオリンピックにおいて常に強い競争相手です。
The Philippines is the third largest English speaking country in the world.
フィリピンは、世界で３番目に大きい英語を話す国です。
“the States” vs “the states”
“the States”と”the states”の違いを例にとると、the States と頭が大文字の記載においては国名を表しているので単数扱いになります。 一方、the states と小文字表記のときはそれぞれの州（Arizona、Nevadaなど）の集合を示すため、複数扱いになります。
The United States is hot in the summer months but Florida and Louisiana are both particularly hot at that time of year.
アメリカは夏の間は暑いですが、フロリダ州とルイジアナ州は両方とも夏は特に暑いです。
Most of the states in America are much larger than Great Britain’s counties.
アメリカのほとんどの州はイギリスの国々よりもかなり大きいです。
