Commodity / Goods / Merchandise / Products ４つの名詞は商品、製品と日本語では同じような意味になること、またカタカナワードの影響で、英文での誤用がよく見られます。意味が類似しているため、間違えていてもネイティブスピーカーはなんとか理解できますが、奇異に聞こえたり、まぎらわしい表現となっていることがよくあります。自然な英語を書くには、それぞれの単語のニュアンスや用法を抑えておく必要があります。
英文添削で特によく見られるのはgoodsとmerchandiseの誤用です。例えば、Tomoko is a collector of idol goods. のgoodsはカタカナ表現ではOKでも英語では誤りです。有名人と結びつく商品には通常merchandiseを使います。

Commodityの用法
Commodityには主に２つの意味があります。
(意味１) （売ったり買ったりできる）原材料、天然資源
（例）coal (石炭), iron（鉄）, metals (金属), crude oil（原油）, coffee (コーヒー), honey (はちみつ), wood (木材), wheat（小麦）など
例文も併せて見てみましょう。
Gas stations have been criticized for refusing to lower the prices for their customers, even though the price of the commodity petroleum has been falling for some time.
ガソリンスタンドは、一定期間石油価格が下がったのにかかわらず、顧客に対して値下げを拒否したため批判された。
The Fair Trade movement aims to pay farmers in developing countries fair prices for the commodities they produce.

Goodsの用法
Goodsという語は経済分野から来ており、「売り買いできるもの」という意味です。上記で説明したcommodity(原材料)、または他のgoodsより作られた「形のあるもの（目に見えるもの）」に対して使われます。（形のないものに対しては service という語が使われます。) 以下例文です。
When I travel overseas I like to buy goods from the local market traders rather than from department stores.
海外を旅行するときは、デパートより地方の小売りから品物を買う方が好きです。
Our company sells eco-friendly cleaning goods. We are hoping to break into the European market next year.

Merchandiseの用法
Merchandiseには主に２つの意味があります。
(意味１) 誰かが販売する意向である「商品」。一般的には目に見える形のあるものに適用されます。
以下、例文です。
The local store does not have as much merchandise as the large supermarket, but I prefer to support local businesses.
地元の店は大きなスーパーマーケットに比べて商品を十分に保有していないが、私は地元のビジネスを応援するのが好きだ。
Our company intends to streamline our merchandise since focus groups indicated that consumers do not like to be overwhelmed with too many choices.

Productの用法
Productは「製品」「生産品」という意味で、動詞produceから来ています。つまり、何かが加工されたり処理されたりした結果という意味合いがあります。もちろん販売する「商品」としても使えるのですが、productは、「製造して作られたもの」である必要があります。
