英語で写真を描写することは、表現力を高めるだけでなく 細かい文法の確認やボキャブラリーの増強に役立ちます。今回は３枚の春の花の写真を英語で描写してみましょう。

写真描写（Picture Description）において重要なことは、全部を記述するのではなく、写真の中で書きたいと思う部分を書いてみるということです。そして自分の言葉で書くことが重要です。正解はありません。「私ならこう説明する」という点も考えながらサンプルを読んでみてください。春の風景描写に役立つ単語も併せて覚えてしまいましょう。
桜のある風景写真

はじめの写真は桜のある風景です。富士山をバックに桜が満開です。まず全体をざっと説明してみます。
| It is a beautiful day with few clouds in the sky and there is a river flowing through the foreground of the picture. In the background we can see the unmistakable figure of Mt. Fuji towering over everything. However, the really eye-catching part of this picture is across the center where we can see many beautiful cherry blossom trees in full spring bloom. |

空にあまり雲がない美しい日です。写真の手前に川が流れています。背景にはくっきりとした形の富士山がそびえ立って見えます。しかしながら、この写真で一番人目を引くのは、中央を横切るたくさんの春満開の桜の木です。

次に個々の部分を詳細に説明してみましょう。まずは富士山の部分です。

次に桜の木々と土手の緑の美しい色合いを説明してみましょう。

The trees appear thick and heavy with their blossom and this must surely be the peak viewing time for these riverside trees. The embankment leading down to the river from the trees is coated with a layer of green grass and provides a lovely contrast to the pink blossom above. |

木々は桜でずっしりとしているので、これらの川沿いの桜を見る絶好のタイミングでしょう。木々から川へ続く土手は何層もの草に覆われていて、ピンクの桜ときれいなコントラストになっています。

チューリップのある風景写真

同じように、チューリップのある風景にもチャレンジしてみましょう。並んで咲いている様子をどう表現しますか？以下は花の部分描写のみご紹介します。練習ではぜひ背景や遠くの木々の描写にもチャレンジしてみてください。

This is a stunning photograph with an amazing array of colors in it. In the foreground there are perhaps thousands of beautiful tulip flowers standing in full bloom. These vivid tulips have green stems and are capped with yellow, purple, white and red petals and then they seem to repeat themselves, laid out like multiple mosaics. |

驚くほどに色が並んでいる大変美しい写真です。手前には、おそらく何千もの美しいチューリップの花が満開になっています。これらの色鮮やかなチューリップは、緑の茎が黄色、紫、白、そして赤い花びらでおおわれ、そして複数のモザイクが配置されているように、何重にも重ねられているようです。

菜の花のある風景写真

最後に菜の花畑を記述してみましょう。一面に咲いている花はどう表現すればよいでしょうか？

黄色い菜の花が一面に咲いている畑があります。頭上に空色、いくつかのちらばった白い雲のある美しい日です。数えきれないほどの菜の花が誇らしげに立っています。前面の一番高い花はまるで、たくさんの小さな手をカメラに向かって振っているようです。

上の例のように、自分なりの表現を使ったり、こうであろうという推測を入れたり、またちょっとがんばってストーリー仕立てにしてみるのも楽しいですね。描写は、はじめは難しく感じるかもしれませんが慣れると楽しくなります。
